Avoid the Flu, It’s Up to You! Flu viruses spread mainly from person to person through the coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Short of living in a plastic bubble for the next few months, what can you do to minimize your risk? Our good friends at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have some great tips for Stopping the Spread of Germs at Home, Work & School http://cdc.gov/flu/protect/stopgerms.htm Although many of these tips seem like simple common sense, sometimes common sense is what is sorely needed during flu season. One of the best ways to keep from getting the flu is to get a yearly flu vaccine. Some people think they can get the flu from the flu shot. The CDC addresses this and other myths in the Flu Vaccine Facts & Myths information sheet http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/flugallery/2007-08/pdf/f_factmyth_8x11.pdf Don’t let the flu knock you out this season.
