The school committee recently endorsed a preferred schematic for renovations of the science labs at the high school. The cost is estimated to be $8,010,035. 47% is estimated to be paid by Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The project will renovate 11 rooms to meet current standards outlined by the National Science Academy. It will also renovate space impacted by the new science labs. A new roof and full window replacement will take place on the 1970's wing and the current location of the industrial arts wing. When the project is complete there will be one additional science lab and one STEM computer lab. The footprint of the high school is not increasing. Some of the teacher work rooms/offices will need to be reassigned or merged together.
This project came about because of a grant. While the needs of the science labs have been on our radar since 2007 we saw that the needs were beyond our ability to address without state participation. We now have the chance to get it and that's why this project is moving forward. The construction costs are slightly over 5 million dollars, the windows and roof costs are 1.5 million and design, furniture, technology, and contingency costs make up the balance.
