On Monday, May 18th, our Luther Burbank Wind Ensemble traveled to the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill. They were one of 10 groups selected from across the state to perform in the 2026 MMEA Hill Day, a day that combines musical performances with advocacy for the performing arts in our schools.
This event is in its second year and is organized by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association with help from many state leaders. LBMS Wind Ensemble performed a diverse program of repertoire, including an Irish-inspired piece, a Spanish march, a Bach Aria, and a modern piece written by the young composer Adrian B. Sims.
Following the performance, the Wind Ensemble was able to meet and speak with Representative Meghan Kilcoyne, who represents Lancaster. Representative Kilcoyne gave the students a very special tour of the State House, including observation of an Informal House Session. The Speaker of the House officially acknowledged the group inside the House Chambers, meaning the The LBMS Wind Ensemble is forever in the history books as being a part of the proceedings on Monday, May 18th.
After the business within the house, our students were able to explore the house and take pictures in the same spot that President Kennedy gave a speech just prior to his inauguration. Representative Kilcoyne brought civics to life for our students and took the time to answer all of their questions about her work in our government.
